I was quite worried at first at the thought of producing a piece of work inspired by Nadir Afonso as I was really out of my comfort zone. I love the movement in his work and that a lot of it is based on architectural shapes, but I am not good at abstract art.
However, once I decided what to do I really enjoyed working on this. I decided to use an image of Clifton Suspension Bridge (near my home in the UK), but to try and get as much movement in as possible.
I made a quick sketch with a bit of colour added and then scaled it up in black and white to make it 16” X 16” (40.5 X 40.5 cms) and then drew it out onto white cotton. I made a few stencils to add some of the shapes and then stitched with as free a movement as possible. It was great fun!
J'étais assez inquiète au début à l'idée de produire une œuvre inspirée de Nadir Afonso car j'étais vraiment hors de ma zone de confort. J'adore le mouvement dans son travail et le fait qu'une grande partie soit basée sur des formes architecturales, mais je ne suis pas doué en art abstrait.
Cependant, une fois que j'ai décidé quoi faire, j'ai vraiment aimé travailler là-dessus. J'ai fait quelques pochoirs pour ajouter certaines des formes et ensuite cousu avec un mouvement aussi libre que possible. C'était très amusant!
