Marilyn; finished at last / enfin fini

Hello ladies,
My apologies for being the last to finish.  Mes excuses pour avoir été la dernière à terminer.

His my response to the fabulous photograph that our Ana gave to us. It doesn't really have anything to to with Marilyn at all! When I saw the photo I fixed onto the circles - funny how we each see something different isn't it.

C'est ma réponse à la fabuleuse photo que notre Ana nous a donnée. Ça n'a vraiment rien à voir avec Marilyn! Quand j'ai vu la photo, je l'ai fixée sur les cercles - c'est drôle comme nous voyons chacun quelque chose de différent n'est-ce pas.

I decided to use the circles for the design and made an enormous circular piece, full of circular holes. It was over a metre in diameter and looked like a giant donut full of Swiss cheese holes,  - it was fun, but almost impossible to display. I don't really know what I was thinking - maybe that was why it was fun.
So the next challenge was to make it more manageable for display purposes. I decided to pleat and fold it, then used thread laces to draw the whole structure together which turned it into a book-like object. It can support itself as a free standing textile sculpture, but when hung against a flat surface such as a wall its radiating pleats fan out nicely. As a useless object it is quite versatile!

Talking of circles, I am so happy that our group has come full circle and we have collectively agreed to continue - so the circle continues.  We have lots of ideas about what to do next - all we now need to do is decide which appeals to us the most.


J'ai décidé d'utiliser les cercles pour la conception et j'ai fait une énorme pièce circulaire, pleine de trous circulaires. Il faisait plus d'un mètre de diamètre et ressemblait à un beignet géant plein de trous de fromage suisse - c'était amusant, mais presque impossible à afficher. Je ne sais pas vraiment à quoi je pensais - c'était peut-être pour ça que c'était amusant.

Le prochain défi était donc de le rendre plus gérable à des fins d'affichage. J'ai décidé de le plier et de le plier, puis j'ai utilisé des lacets de fil pour rassembler toute la structure, ce qui en a fait un objet semblable à un livre. Il peut se soutenir comme une sculpture textile autoportante, mais lorsqu'il est accroché contre une surface plane comme un mur, ses plis rayonnants se déploient bien. En tant qu'objet inutile, il est assez polyvalent!


En parlant de cercles, je suis tellement heureux que notre groupe ait bouclé la boucle et nous avons collectivement accepté de continuer - donc le cercle continue. Nous avons beaucoup d'idées sur ce qu'il faut faire ensuite - tout ce que nous devons faire maintenant est de décider qui nous plaît le plus.

Marilyn is on her way

I am so sorry for bing so quiet here on the blog - I have been working, I promise!

I am hoping to get my piece for Ana's fantastic photo finished by the weekend - and then post it here. In the meantime, here are two photos of the work in progress. It is still very experimental, so I don't really know how it is going to look when finished, so it will be a surprise for me too!

Je suis vraiment désolé d'avoir été si calme ici sur le blog - je travaille, je le promets!

J'espère que ma pièce pour la photo fantastique d'Ana sera terminée d'ici le week-end - puis la poster ici. En attendant, voici deux photos des travaux en cours. C'est encore très expérimental, donc je ne sais pas vraiment à quoi ça va ressembler une fois terminé, donc ce sera une surprise pour moi aussi!

Finally, I can send you an image of my piece, Marilyn!

The essence, for me, of the original image was the coupling of the glamorous and the domestic characteristics expected from women and so I first wondered how the structure of my piece could be true to this. When in my search I found the two interlocking circles I knew that was what I wanted to use.

Each circle represents the glamorous and the domestic respectively. The first consists of a variety of individual circles of silk, velvet, lace, adorned with beads, pearls and crystals. The second, also consisting of circles but this time either made from common domestic fabrics, dish towels, kitchen cloths, jay cloths and pot scourers or images indicating common domestic essentials.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece as I enjoyed the mind gymnastics that took place in the process.

L'essence, pour moi, de l'image originale était le couplage du glamour et des caractéristiques domestiques attendues des femmes et je me suis donc d'abord demandé comment la structure de ma pièce pouvait être fidèle à cela. Lorsque dans ma recherche, j'ai trouvé les deux cercles imbriqués, je savais que c'était ce que je voulais utiliser.

Chaque cercle représente respectivement le glamour et le domestique. Le premier se compose d'une variété de cercles individuels de soie, de velours, de dentelle, ornés de perles, de perles et de cristaux. Le second, également composé de cercles, mais cette fois-ci soit en tissus domestiques courants, torchons, torchons de cuisine, torchons en jay et éponges à récurer, soit en images illustrant les essentiels domestiques courants.

J'ai vraiment aimé créer cette pièce tout en appréciant la gymnastique mentale qui a eu lieu au cours du processus.

In a similar way to Fran, I too cannot comment directly on peoples posts so have to write a separate entry. Fran, we may need to ask Claire what our respective iPads / computers have in common!

I want to respond to both Denise and Stephanie’s creations.

The golden cage, Denise and the questioning about where women’s freedom begins. I love the thought behind the creation as well as the depiction itself. Such glamour, such riches in gold and the domestic pot forming the solid base. Thank you for a thought provoking piece.

And Stephanie, your always beautifully striking work, I just love your shoes, for which you are well known! The quotes, the background colours allowing the silver to really shine, your accuracy with perspective all create such a striking and inviting piece of work. And the use of the dog food bag gives an interesting twist to it - creating glamour from what would otherwise go into the waste bin! Thank you for such delight for the senses.

De la même manière que Fran, je ne peux pas non plus commenter directement les messages des gens, je dois donc écrire une entrée distincte. Fran, nous devrons peut-être demander à Claire ce que nos iPad / ordinateurs respectifs ont en commun!

Je veux répondre aux créations de Denise et Stephanie.

La cage dorée, Denise et la question de savoir où commence la liberté des femmes. J'aime la pensée derrière la création ainsi que la représentation elle-même. Un tel glamour, de telles richesses en or et le pot domestique formant la base solide. Merci pour une pièce qui fait réfléchir.

Et Stéphanie, ton travail toujours magnifique, j'adore tes chaussures pour lesquelles tu es bien connu! Les citations, les couleurs de fond permettant à l'argent de briller vraiment, ta précision avec la perspective créent un travail si frappant et invitant. Et l'utilisation du sac de nourriture pour chien donne une tournure intéressante à cela - créant du glamour à partir de ce qui autrement irait dans la poubelle! Merci pour tant de plaisir pour les sens.

I still can’t comment on posts on my iPad, so am taking the lazy way out and creating a new post...
I love the Cage d’or and the commentary down the side - the bird in the gilded cage - is she really happy.....
And the shoes! I assume it’s yours, Stephanie?  Inspirational to use the inside of your dog bag.  And totally in keeping with the sculptor’s way of working - using the unexpected to create something we all recognise.
I am so looking forward to seeing all the pieces hung and displayed in France in April.

Marilyn's Shoes - Stephanie

I found this photo very inspiring and could have made several different types of quilt.

However, I wanted to make shiny shoes and to create a bit of a 3-D effect.  After lots of experimentation I used the reverse side of the bag that my dog's food comes in, which is both shiny and robust.  There was no problem with stitching into it.

Using a trapunto method, I first stitched the shoes onto wadding and then added another layer of wadding behind the shoes before applying them to the background.

The quilting is simply quotations from Marilyn.  (english only - sorry!)

I added a few silver pieces (possibly diamond chips) around the edge.

                         

J'ai trouvé cette photo très inspirante et j'aurais pu faire plusieurs types de quilt.

Cependant, je voulais créer des chaussures brillantes et créer un peu un effet 3D. Après beaucoup d'expérimentation, j'ai utilisé le revers du sac dans lequel la nourriture de mon chien arrive, qui est à la fois brillante et robuste. Il n'y avait aucun problème avec la couture.

En utilisant une méthode trapunto, j'ai d'abord cousu les chaussures sur la ouate, puis ajouté une autre couche de ouate derrière les chaussures avant de l'appliquer à l'arrière-plan.

Le matelassage est simplement des citations de Marilyn.  (anglais seulement - desole!)

J'ai ajouté quelques pièces d'argent (éventuellement des éclats de diamant) autour du bord.

Merci Ana. Ta  photo m’a permis de découvrir les œuvres fantastiques de cette artiste portugaise Joana Vasconcelos dont les sculptures sont toutes très marquantes !
J’ai adoré ce superbe escarpin qui nous renvoie à une image de rêve, de luxe et d’élégance, réalisé cependant avec des marmites très couramment utilisées.
C’est cette dualité que j’ai voulu retenir dans mon travail entre une vie de star ou une vie ordinaire, pouvant toutes deux être sources d’enfermement.
J’ai choisi une cage dorée très brillante avec de petits miroirs, et à l’intérieur une marmite très brillante aussi, sur laquelle est appuyée une silhouette de Marilyn. Pas d’ouverture cependant car chacune doit trouver le chemin qui lui est propre…
Voilà donc ma « Cage dorée ».

Thank you Ana. Your photo allowed me to discover the fantastic works of this portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos whose sculptures are all very remarkable!
I loved this gorgeous pump which brings us of an image of dream, luxury and elegance, realized with very commonly used pots.
It is this duality that I wanted to retain in my work between a star’s life or an ordinary life, both of which can be sources of confinement.
I chose a very shiny golden cage with small mirrors, and inside a very bright pot too, on which is supported a silhouette of Marilyn. No opening however because everyone must find their own path…
So this is my “Golden Cage”.

Oh how attractive those red lips are, Fran! It’s amazing how that bit of colour becomes the first element that calls one in. And the simple lines creating the image of Marilyn so very effective in producing the atmosphere.

I love seeing the way you create the containing background and then present the essence. Once again want to see it in the flesh, touch it and admire it from a close distance. Well done.

Oh comme ces lèvres rouges sont attirantes, Fran! C'est incroyable de voir comment ce morceau de couleur devient le premier élément qui en appelle un. Et les lignes simples qui créent l'image de Marilyn sont si efficaces pour produire l'atmosphère.

J'adore voir la façon dont vous créez l'arrière-plan contenant, puis présentez l'essence. Encore une fois, je veux le voir dans la chair, le toucher et l'admirer de près. Bien fait.

I liked the star quality of the shoes and use of other materials in Ana’s photo.  I also wanted glitz and glamour. I started with an outline of the shoes and extended the lines in all directions.  I then simplified these to make a pleasing pattern - losing the shoe shapes was a pity but couldn’t be helped. I then coloured in every shape using gold, silver, shimmer, pearl paints. I found a  picture of MM which I simplified and outlined on the quilt first in stitch and then in black paint to make it stand out.  Finally - the gorgeous red lips.

Je voulais glamour! Et Glitz! Et reference aux chaussures.  J’ai commencé par un aperçu des chaussures et étendu les lignes en toutes directions.  Ensuite j’ai simplifié les lignes pour créer un motif agréable- malheureusement on ne voit plus les chaussures - tans pis..  j’ai coloré toutes les formes en peinture dorées, argentées, nacrées - tout ce que je pouvait trouver!  Finalement j’ai trouvé  une photo de MM que j’ai esquissée, d’abord au point et ensuite en peinture noire pour que cela se resort.  Et bien sur les lèvres rouges.

Et qu’est ce qu’on fait maintenant? On repars avec d’autres photos? On prend chacune un thème?

C’est clair pour moi qu’on doit continuer cet excellente groupe!
