Coucou les Dames!

I made it - just in time!  /Je l'ai fait - juste à temps !

This one has been difficult for me as I have had too many other things going on to give it my best attention up until this last week. I have to confess, Fran, when I first saw Piper's work I didn't have an instant affinity but as time has passed and I have been able to look more closely into the unusual variety of his work and found something which spoke to me. His Foliate Heads series.

Ce projet a été difficile pour moi car j'avais trop de choses à faire pour lui accorder toute mon attention jusqu'à la semaine dernière. Je dois avouer, Fran, que lorsque j'ai vu le travail de Piper pour la première fois, je n'ai pas eu une affinité immédiate, mais avec le temps, j'ai pu regarder de plus près la variété inhabituelle de son travail et j'ai trouvé quelque chose qui m'a parlé. Sa série des têtes foliacées.

My version is very different, in my style. I chose to depict a child, wide eyes and cautious, emerging from behind the newly sprouting oak leaves of the new spring. The child is a symbol of my hope that we can all start a new life again, emerging from our Covid hideaways.

Ma version est très différente, dans mon style. J'ai choisi de représenter un enfant, les yeux écarquillés et prudent, émergeant de derrière les feuilles de chêne nouvellement germées du nouveau printemps. L'enfant est un symbole de mon espoir que nous puissions tous recommencer une nouvelle vie, en sortant de nos cachettes de Covid.

Foliate Child, 2021

The image was drawn onto lino then carved and printed onto cotton fabric with Caligo safewash inks which were then worked into with fabric medium before being left to dry for a week or so. The print was then layered with cotton wadding and backing and stitched. It measures 30cm (12") in diameter.

The child has a sibling - not yet finished, but will develop as we emerge from our Covid isolation.

L'image a été dessinée sur du lino, puis sculptée et imprimée sur du tissu en coton avec des encres Caligo safewash, qui ont ensuite été travaillées avec du médium pour tissu avant d'être laissées à sécher pendant une semaine environ. L'impression a ensuite été superposée à de la ouate de coton et à un support, puis cousue. Il mesure 30 cm de diamètre. L'enfant a un frère ou une sœur - pas encore terminé, mais il se développera au fur et à mesure que nous sortirons de notre isolement Covid.

I am so thrilled that we have all finished our pieces for this challenge. Thank you Fran for pushing me to explore Piper's work. And once again I am amazed at the variety and quality of our group's responses.

Inspired by John Piper: Ana

 Dear women,

Here goes my creation inspired by the John Piper challenge.

I have always been fascinated by stained glass and have for a long time been wanting to experiment with expressing this love in fabric, and so here was the ideal opportunity. The cathedrals of both Liverpool and Coventry show Piper’s amazing work.

I wanted to produce the effect of stained glass, visible from both sides. I used dyed hemp gauze placed on tulle and then held down via fusible bias binding. Once the front had been completed I turned it over and did the same on the back. The piece is held in the frame via the tulle giving it that suspended effect which was the intention.

If you look very closely you will see the effect of the difficulty of combining a hot iron and tulle even when using great care and attention and the use of baking parchment under the iron. But I have a solution: the two sides of the frame are held together via magnets and so I will be able (with some fiddly work) to replace the tulle when necessary.

I have so enjoyed doing this piece and love the effect. Thank you Fran for the challenge. Wishing you all a pleasant Sunday and a good week ahead. See you all next Sunday.

Voici ma création inspirée du défi John Piper.

J'ai toujours été fasciné par le vitrail et j'ai depuis longtemps envie d'expérimenter pour exprimer cet amour dans le tissu, alors c'était l'occasion idéale. Les cathédrales de Liverpool et de Coventry montrent le travail incroyable de Piper.

Je voulais produire l'effet du vitrail, visible des deux côtés. J'ai utilisé de la gaze de chanvre teinte placée sur du tulle, puis maintenue par un biais thermocollant. Une fois le recto terminé, je l'ai retourné et j'ai fait de même au verso. La pièce est maintenue dans le cadre via le tulle lui donnant cet effet suspendu qui était l'intention.

Si vous regardez de très près, vous verrez l'effet de la difficulté de combiner un fer chaud et du tulle même en utilisant beaucoup de soin et d'attention et l'utilisation de papier sulfurisé sous le fer. Mais j'ai une solution: les deux côtés du cadre sont maintenus ensemble par des aimants et je pourrai donc (avec un travail fastidieux) remplacer le tulle si nécessaire.

J'ai tellement aimé faire cette pièce et j'adore l'effet. Merci Fran pour le défi. Je vous souhaite à tous un agréable dimanche et une bonne semaine à venir. Rendez-vous tous dimanche prochain.

Inspired by John Piper: Stephanie

My response to John Piper.  This is not of anywhere in particular, but I wanted a bit of a layered look and so painted the background and then added some raw edged applique to give depth.  I added some more paint after stitching.  It measures 16" X 16".

Ma reponse a John Piper.  Ce n'est nulle part en particulier, mais je voulais un peu un look en chouches et j'ai donc peint et puis j'ai ajoute une application a bords bruts pour donner de la profondeur.  Apres la couture j'ai ajoute un peu de peinture.  16" X 16"
 

Inspired by John Piper: Fran

 John Piper used a variety of  techniques in his works.  

I like his use of collage, the fact that he painted ruins - bits of buildings, often overlapping so it’s hard to see where one starts and another finishes, and occasional splashes of violent colour.

I’ve concentrated on arches, stained glass window shapes, mismatched buildings and partial bits of masonry, the darkness of war with strong accents of the complementaries orange and blue

Based on a recent workshop, I used tissue paper and pages from an old book to form a collaged background.  I then used bleach to discharge, wax crayons as resist, and then used paint, ink, oil pastels on top.

And I haven’t stitched into it.  I may do so at a later time.

Je me suis concentré sur les arches, les formes de vitraux, les bâtiments dépareillés et les morceaux partiels de maçonnerie, l'obscurité de la guerre avec de forts accents de complémentarité orange et bleu

Basé sur un atelier, j'ai utilisé du papier de soie et les pages d'un vieux livre pour former un fond collé. J'ai ensuite utilisé de l'eau de Javel pour décharger, des crayons de cire comme réserve, puis de la peinture, de l'encre et des pastels à l'huile sur le dessus.

Et je n’y ai pas cousu. Peut être plus tard.

Inspired by John Piper: Denise - Chapelle Saint Jean

 

Merci Fran de nous avoir fait découvrir John Piper. J’ai été très attirée à la fois par ses collages et par ses peintures et sérigraphies architecturales.
Nous habitons une commune, Tallard, qui possède un Château du XIVe siècle classé monument historique et qui est en cours de restauration depuis quelques années. A l’intérieur de la cour du château, se trouve la Chapelle Saint Jean construite au début du XVIe siècle, de style gothique flamboyant.
J’ai choisi pour ce défi, de travailler la façade de cette Chapelle Saint Jean à la manière la sérigraphie de John Piper « Petit Palais Pink and Yellow »
A partir d’une photo de la façade, j’ai utilisé un logiciel pour faire des retouches et des modifications de couleur. J’ai ensuite imprimé chaque partie sur du tissu coton, puis rassemblé les 4 éléments de la façade par couleur et placé l’ensemble sur un interface un peu rigide. Ensuite le piqué libre souligne chaque élément d’architecture.
Je vous souhaite une belle journée et attends le prochain défi avec impatience.

Thank you Fran for introducing us to John Piper. I was very attracted to both his collages and his architectural paintings and Screenprint on paper
We live in a commune, Tallard, which has a 14th century castle listed as a historical monument and which has been undergoing restoration for some years. Inside the castle courtyard is the Saint Jean Chapel built in the early sixteenth century, in flamboyant Gothic style.
I chose for this challenge, to work on the facade of this Chapel Saint Jean in the way silkscreen of John Piper «Petit Palais Pink and Yellow»
From a photo of the facade, I used a software to make alterations and modifications. Then I printed each part on cotton fabric, then gathered the 4 elements of the facade by color and placed the whole on an rigid interface. Then free machine embroidery underlines each element of architecture.
