Comme j'ai pris plaisir à voir les créations inspirées de Michel Folon et, comme c'est habituellement le cas, chacune avec sa marque distinctive de l'artisan. Le premier arrivé, celui de Lydie, le jeu d'échelle que j'ai trouvé très intéressant et bien sûr très caractéristique du travail de Folon. Il y a un aspect amusant, mais aussi ce quelque chose d'inconfortable qui n'a pas de sens.

Fran, la présence frappante des trois personnages en fait une image assez puissante et je l'aime beaucoup. L'ombrage de fond et la gradation de la couleur le liant à l'élément très caractéristique du travail de Folon, je pense, fonctionne très bien.

Je suis toujours émerveillée par la beauté 3D de ton travail Claire et tu l'as encore fait. La gradation des couleurs apparaissant au fur et à mesure que nous passons d'une forme de structure à l'autre est en effet très intelligente. Le travail est impeccable comme toujours.

Et puis Denise, ton travail si léger et onirique, et sa captation dans un cadre dans le temps ! J'ai vraiment aimé lire ce qui s'est passé dans la réflexion derrière la pièce que nous voyons. Je l'aime bien.

Et le mien viendra quand je parviendrai à déballer les cartons et à avoir un peu d'espace de travail dans ma salle de jeux ! En attendant, j'annoncerai l'inspiration pour le prochain défi : je voulais faire venir une artiste féminine et j'en ai choisi une que nous avons toutes rencontrée auparavant, une femme forte, colorée, puissante et influente : Frida Kahlo

How I have enjoyed seeing the creations inspired by Michel Folon and, as is usually the case, each one with its distinctive mark of the maker. The first to arrive, that of Lydie, the playing with scale I found very interesting and of course very characteristic of Folon’s work. There’s an aspect of fun but also that something uncomfortable of the not making sense.

Fran, the striking presence of the three figures makes it quite a powerful image and I like it very much. The background shading and grading of colour linking it to the very characteristic element in Folon’s work I think works very well.

I’m always amazed at the 3D beauty of your work Claire and you have done it again. The grading of colour showing as we move from one form of the structure to the next is very clever indeed. The work is impeccable as always.

And then Denise, your work so light and dreamlike, and the capturing of it in a frame in time! I really enjoyed reading what went into the thinking behind the piece we see. I like it.

And mine will come when I manage to unpack the boxes and get some working space in my play room! Meanwhile I will announce the inspiration for the next challenge: I wanted to bring in a female artist and have chosen one that we have all met before, a strong, colourful, powerful and influential woman: Frida Kahlo

Folon "ma part de rêve..." Denise

 

Ce que j’aime chez Folon, c’est son regard plein de poésie et de délicatesse, sa curiosité sur le monde. Il aborde tous les thèmes avec un regard particulier où le rêve est toujours présent.
Il disait lui-même : « J’ai simplement essayé de fixer mes propres rêves, avec l’espoir que les autres y accrochent les leurs ».

J’ai donc réalisé un travail en organza et en piqué libre, pour capter la légèreté de son trait de crayon, les dégradés subtils de couleurs que l’on retrouve dans son travail.
J’ai aussi encadré ce travail pour saisir ce moment « instantané » qu’est le rêve, on le saisit au passage, puis il s’envole.

What I like about Folon is his eyes full of poetry and delicacy, his curiosity about the world.  He approaches all themes with a particular eye where the dream is always present.
He himself said, "I just tried to fix my own dreams, hoping that others would hang on to theirs."

So I did a work in organza and free machine embroidery, to capture the lightness of his pencil stroke, the subtle shades of colors that we find in his work.
I also framed this work to capture this “instantaneous” moment that is the dream, we capture it in passing, and then it flies away.
This is “my part of the dream…”

Inspired by Jean-Michel Folon: Claire Passmore

This was a really difficult artist for me to use for inspiration - and I don't really know why! It is not because I do not like Folon's work, on the contrary, I love his use of vibrant colour and the clever 'jokes' he makes, playing around with scale,  ideas, negative space and so on. After several attempts with different ideas I decided to just focus on the title of the piece below, and colour. Here is the piece I chose to inspire me: Couché de Soleil.

J'ai eu beaucoup de mal à m'inspirer de cet artiste - et je ne sais pas vraiment pourquoi ! Ce n'est pas parce que je n'aime pas le travail de Folon, au contraire, j'adore son utilisation de couleurs vives et les " blagues " intelligentes qu'il fait, en jouant avec l'échelle, les idées, l'espace négatif, etc. Après plusieurs tentatives avec différentes idées, j'ai décidé de me concentrer sur le titre de la pièce ci-dessous, et sur la couleur. Voici l'œuvre que j'ai choisie pour m'inspirer : Couché de Soleil.

The careful transition of colour from deep red, through yellow to a faint green is perfect  The small man, looking upwards at the white circle... makes me smile. Has the sun fallen from the sky or is that just a big boulder? - that is for us to decide I guess.

This is my piece, which I have called 'Nocturnal Glow'

 La transition prudente de la couleur, du rouge profond au jaune en passant par un vert pâle, est parfaite -  Le petit homme, qui regarde le cercle blanc vers le haut... me fait rire. Le soleil serait-il tombé du ciel ?  C'est à nous d'en décider, je suppose.

It is made from cotton organdie, as most of my other pieces in this style are. I love the vibrant colour that can be achieved when it is dyed. I hope you like it!

Il est réalisé en coton organdi, comme la plupart de mes autres pièces de ce style. J'adore les couleurs vives que l'on peut obtenir lorsqu'il est teint. J'espère qu'il vous plaira !

Jean-Michel Folon : Fran

 

A few things struck me about this artist's work - his use of gradations in colour; his birdmen; that he often was asked to design for other media (books, cinema, etc).  So I thought I would design my Folon-style cover for a favourite Play produced in 1988 and television serial in 1991 A Question of Attribution.

I chose this for many reasons - the play compares a dual portrait with possibly a missing man (or men) with the picture  The Allegory of Prudence by Titian.  There were been questions over whether the painting was his; whether it really is about Prudence or the Ages of Man, and the play is about spy rings, and whether there was another man (or men)......  Blunt who is the Art Adviser to the Queen in the Play turns out to be a spy - in 1979 and the picture when x-rayed shows the possibility of a third and possibly fourth man.

Certaines choses m'ont frappees dans le travail de cet artists - son utilisation des degrades de couleurs, ses hommes-oiseaux, qu'on lui ai demande souvent de concevoir pour d'autres supports - livres, cinema, etc).  J'ai donc pense que je ferais la couverture en style Folon pour une serie televisee preferee qui est sortie il y a de nombreuses annees: A Question of Attribution. 

Je l'ai choisie pour beaucoup de raisons - la piece de theatre se passe dans une salle devant une peinture sois disant de deux personnes mais peut etre il y en a un troisieme.... et sois disant fait par Titian et est comparee avec Allegory of Prudence by Titian.  Il y a eu des questions quant a savoir si la peinture etait la sienne; s'il s'agit vraiment de Prudence ou les ages de l'homme; la production concerne les reseaux d'espionnage et s'il y avait un troisieme ou meme un quartrieme homme....  en fait Blunt qui est le conseiller artistique de la Reine d;Angleterre s'avere etre un espion et quand la peinture est radiographiee il y a en effet une troisieme et peut etre une quatrieme personne.

J'ai employé uniquement des craies et des crayons aquarellables pour garder l'esprit de l’aquarelliste J. M .Folon avec de larges dégradés de couleurs.

J'aime la poésie qui se dégage de son œuvre ,l'errance de ses   personnages .

Les éléments ont été dessinés ,peints à part ensuite appliqués sur le fond  .

L'oiseau et le poisson font allusion à une chanson de Juliette Gréco ,paroles de J.M. Riviere .

I used only watercolour chalks and pencils to keep the spirit of the watercolourist J. M. Folon with large colour gradations.

I like the poetry that emerges from his work, the wandering of his characters.

The elements were drawn, painted separately and then applied to the background.

The bird and the fish allude to a song by Juliette Greco, lyrics by J.M. Riviere.
