Ana: El Campesino - inspired by

El Campesino

What an enjoyable challenge and thank you Claire, for giving us an artist, activist, architect so full of life and work that was a pleasure to explore.

Very early on the big question became: well, what do I use as inspiration? There was just so much! But something attracted me to El Campesino. There was a simplicity of essence about it, an honouring of the people for working the volcanic land! I found the colours very pleasing, the simple colours of the dark volcanic earth, the white of the houses and the bright green. So I had chosen. This was what I was going to use.

I also wanted to create something simple but impactful, thought of minimalist work and ultimately came up with something that was still based on reality but with minimal lines. I stitched the green and used Inktense for the lines. It was ok, just ok. And then things went wrong, the Inktense spread!!!!

And so it was time for a rethink. I really thought of essence and came up with what has emerged. I do like it, like the fact that I have done something totally different and the colours work for me.

Quel défi agréable et merci Claire, de nous avoir offert un artiste, activiste, architecte si plein de vie et de travail qui a été un plaisir à explorer.

Très tôt, la grande question est devenue: qu'est-ce que j'utilise comme inspiration? Il y en avait tellement! Mais quelque chose m'a attiré à El Campesino. Il y avait là une simplicité d'essence, un honneur du peuple pour avoir travaillé la terre volcanique! J'ai trouvé les couleurs très agréables, les couleurs simples de la terre volcanique sombre, le blanc des maisons et le vert vif. J'avais donc choisi. C'était ce que j'allais utiliser.

Je voulais aussi créer quelque chose de simple mais percutant, pensé à un travail minimaliste et j'ai finalement trouvé quelque chose qui était toujours basé sur la réalité mais avec des lignes minimales. J'ai cousu le vert et utilisé Inktense pour les lignes. C'était ok, juste ok. Et puis les choses ont mal tourné, le Inktense s'est propagé !!!!

Et il était donc temps de repenser. J'ai vraiment pensé à l'essence et j'ai trouvé ce qui a émergé. J'aime ça, comme le fait que j'ai fait quelque chose de totalement différent et que les couleurs fonctionnent pour moi.

It is really amazing how, every time, we each make something completely different but, at the same time, really relevant to the subject.

C'est tellement incroyable que, chaque fois, nous faisons toutes quelque chose de très différent mais, en même temps, très pertinent et fidèle au sujet.

A little early, but I thought you might like to think about the next piece of work.  I propose Pierre Bonnard as the next artist.

Un peu tôt, mais j'ai pensé que vous aimeriez peut-être penser au prochain travail. Je propose Pierre Bonnard comme prochain artiste.

Love the piece Fran, and appreciate how you came to arrive at what you created. I like the symbolism but even without it the image is bold, it’s colourful and very pleasing to the eye.

Oh Denise, c’étaient de beaux mots à entendre mais le travail n’était pas le mien, c’est celui de Fran. Je suis toujours occupé avec le mien, j'ai également eu du mal à le faire, j'ai fait un morceau à mi-chemin, puis la «catastrophe» est tombée et j'ai dû changer de piste, je me sens beaucoup mieux avec ce que je fais maintenant et j'espère terminer dans la semaine.

Oh Denise, those were beautiful words to hear but the work was not mine, it is Fran’s.  I am still busy with mine, have also struggled with it, had a piece half way done and then ‘disaster’ fell and I had to change track am feeling much better with what I am doing now and hope to finish within the week.

César Manrique :Fran

Well this was a challenging challenge!
I loved the pictures I saw on line, however as I haven’t been to Lanzarote I struggled to get a handle on Manrique’s body of work, and it took me a long time to settle on something.
I finally decided the key components for me were: lanzarote is a volcanic island - dark, textured, lava; Manrique created islands of colour - his cactus garden for instance, his multi-coloured sculptures; volcanic islands quite often produce tiny islands of vegetation and flowers.
So my piece has turquoise representing the sea, with strands of black lava surrounding little islands of red (lava) and green (cactus garden), with touches of colour coming through the black.
I still have to bind it.....

Eh bien j’ trouve ce défi difficile bien que j’ai adoré les photos que j’ai vues en ligne.  Je ne suis jamais allée à Lanzarote et j’ai eu du mal à comprendre l’oeuvre complet de Manrique.  Il m’a fallu du temps pour qu’une idée gel.
J’ai décidé que les éléments clés pour moi étaient: Lanzarote est une île volcanique - l’Ave sombre et texture; Manrique à crée des îles de couleur - Jardín de cactus, ses sculptures multicolores; les îles volcaniques produisent souvent de minuscules îles de végétation et de fleurs.  Ma pièce donc represent la mer, le lave, les îles de couleurs, et les petites taches de couleurs.

Claire - love the fan.  As usual very novel approach to our challenge.  I particularly like the use of stiffener for the ribs of the fan.  Colours are spot on.  AS others have said, you’ve managed to bring together many of the elements of Manrique’ S work.
Bravo Claire.  Encore une fois tu as réussi quelque chose de nouveau pour notre défi.  J’aime beaucoup la construction de l'éventail.  Et bien entendu les couleurs sont superbes. Comme d’autres On dit - tu as bien rassemblé tous les éléments du travail de Manrique.

It’s another WOW piece from you Claire, so thoughtfully imagined, so beautifully made. The colours are so vibrant and so strong. Never having been in Lanzarote your description allowed me to imagine the curvature of the caves, the colours of his work and the golden sun on the land. I really enjoyed your sharing of how your thought processes unfolded, thank you. Another brilliant piece.

C'est une autre pièce WOW de toi Claire, si imaginativement réfléchie, si magnifiquement faite. Les couleurs sont si vives et si fortes. N'ayant jamais été à Lanzarote, ta description m'a permis d'imaginer la courbure des grottes, les couleurs de son travail et le soleil d'or sur la terre. J'ai vraiment apprécié ta partage de la façon dont tes processus de pensée se sont déroulés, merci. Une autre pièce brillante.

Cactus Garden Folding Fan : Eventail de Jardin du Cactus

There are so many things about the work of César Manrique that I love it was difficult to know which direction to take for this piece. His work is certainly broad and that is part of why I find it so interesting. You don't just passively observe his work, you can sit within it and be part of it - it fills all of the senses. 

Initially I thought I might explore making something related to his last intervention work, Jardín de Cactus.  It is an incredible place, calm and full of fabulous sculptural cacti, winding pathways on different levels, bold colour contrasts and lots of little surprises. My second thought was to explore Manrique's sculptural work, in particular what he called 'wind toys'. Manrique's island home of Lanzarote is a windy place and in the past was covered with an abundance of windmills.  Most of these are now gone, but Manrique sought to "give the wind something new to play with" and created numerous kinetic mobile sculptures which he placed all over the island. I spent several months pondering what to create and eventually settled on a combination both of these aspects and created a folding fan. The fan is decorated with applique, representing a view from within deep the crater of the Jardín de Cactus. The fan shape allows the image to curve, much like the bowl form of the garden.

Here are a few views of the fan showing how the image changes as it is folded and unfolded. It is an unsophisticated wind toy in comparison to Manrique's complex structures, but it is fully functional and might come in useful on a hot day!

 The fan blades are made from several layers of stitched interfacing to ensure they were strong enough to support the decorated part of the fan and still be able to fold. The image is made from vibrantly dyed cotton organdie applique, using the colours directly from the landscape and a little gold leaf to represent the sun.

The idea has worked quite well, but I think to be really effective it needs to be on a much bigger sale.

Éventail Pliable Cactus Garden: Eventail de Jardin du Cactus

Il y a tellement de choses sur le travail de César Manrique que j'adore, il était difficile de savoir quelle direction prendre pour cette pièce. Son travail est certainement vaste et c'est en partie pourquoi je le trouve si intéressant. Vous ne vous contentez pas d'observer passivement son travail, vous pouvez vous asseoir à l'intérieur et en faire partie - il remplit tous les sens.

Au début, je pensais que je pourrais explorer la possibilité de créer quelque chose en rapport avec son dernier travail d'intervention, Jardín de Cactus. C'est un endroit incroyable, calme et plein de fabuleux cactus sculpturaux, des sentiers sinueux à différents niveaux, des contrastes de couleurs audacieux et beaucoup de petites surprises. La deuxième pensée a été d'explorer le travail sculptural de Manrique, en particulier ce qu'il a appelé les «jouets à vent». L'île de Lanzarote, domicile de Manrique est un endroit venteux et dans le passé était couverte d'une abondance de moulins à vent. La plupart d'entre eux ont maintenant disparu, mais Manrique a cherché à "donner au vent quelque chose de nouveau avec lequel jouer" et a créé de nombreuses sculptures cinétiques mobiles qu'il a placées sur toute l'île. J'ai passé plusieurs mois à réfléchir à ce qu'il fallait créer et j'ai finalement opté pour une combinaison de ces deux aspects et créé un éventail pliant. L'éventail est décoré d'appliques, représentant une vue de l'intérieur du cratère du Jardín de Cactus. La forme en éventail permet à l'image de se courber, tout comme la forme de bol du jardin.

Voici quelques vues d'éventail montrant comment l'image change lorsqu'il est pliée et dépliée. C'est un jouet à vent peu sophistiqué par rapport aux structures complexes de Manrique, mais il est entièrement fonctionnel et pourrait s'avérer utile par une chaude journée!

Les pales d'évantail sont constituées de plusieurs couches d'interfaçage cousues pour garantir qu'elles étaient suffisamment solides pour supporter la partie décorée  et pouvoir encore se plier. L'image est réalisée à partir d'une applique en organdi de coton aux teintes vives, utilisant les couleurs directement du paysage et une petite feuille d'or pour représenter le soleil.

L'idée a bien fonctionné, mais je pense que pour être vraiment efficace, il doit être le faire beaucoup plus grand.

Quelle façon intéressante de rassembler tant d’aspects du travail de Manrique Denise. Il y a tellement réfléchi, intégrant les nombreux aspects qu'il était en tant que personne et tout ce qu'il a fait comme expression de cela. Ton travail m'appelle pour regarder chaque «carte postale» et les détails qu'elle contient. J'ai tellement aimé l'explorer. Je te remercie.

What an interesting way to bring so many aspects of Manrique’s work together Denise. So much thought has gone into it, integrating the many aspects he was as a person and all he did as expression of that. Your work calls me in to look at each ‘post card’ and the detail within. Avec César Manrique que nous a proposé par Claire, j’ai découvert un artiste au fort engagement personnel qui a  réussi à intégrer d’une manière extraordinaire sa vision écologique et ses idées artistiques tout en préservant l’environnement de son île canarienne natale.

With César Manrique proposed by Claire, I discovered an artist with a strong personal commitment who managed to integrate in an extraordinary way his ecological vision and artistic ideas while preserving the environment of his native Canarian island.
«Building a paradise in the ruins of hell»
I wanted to show the striking contrast between this hostile volcanic nature of Lanzarote, made of lava fields and volcanic ash, and bright colors of his multidisciplinary work.
