Ana: Variation on Red Carpet by Bonnard

Of the various characteristic of Bonnard’s work, the one that first caught my eye was his bold use of intense colour. As I read more about him and his characteristic of working on many canvasses at the same time I imagined him, in his studio looking around and being attracted to which canvas called him for some extra strokes. I don’t know at all if my imagination has any link to the reality but that is what inspired me to do the piece I did.

I used the bold colours of his piece entitled ‘Fruit on Red Carpet’ and then used hand stitch as the brush strokes. The stitching on the white piece was an experiment making ‘holes’ on gauze. I like the effect.

J'aime l'effet.

  1. Ana - this is another really interesting piece. I like that you research of Bonnard and his working style played a part in this piec. It just goes to show we don't just have to use the images of an artist to inspire us.
I found Bonnard's 'Fruit on Red Carpet' on this link https://wikioo.org/paintings.php?refarticle=8XYRDG&titlepainting=Fruit%20on%20the%20red%20carpet&artistname=Pierre%20Bonnard
and can see exactly why you have chosen the colours, fabrics and stitches you haveused. A really clever idea. I know you really enjoy the stitch element of your work so I'm sure you enjoyed making this piece. Love the exploration of holes too!

    Bravo !

Oh Anna, what a magnificent piece; we find quite the spirit of Bonnard, with his colors, the different planes that we find in his canvases, and the «interiors» that he often painted.
You mix machine and hand embroidery so perfectly; it makes your work even more lively and gives depth.
I especially like your work, your hand embroideries always present in your quilts, because I don’t know how to embroider by hand…
    Bravo!
