Ma réponse à la Frida Kahlo est enfin terminée. Représentant sa vie déchirée et déchiquetée mais aussi son amour caractéristique pour la couleur, c'est audacieux et fort et j'aime ça. J'ai eu du mal à obtenir les fleurs correctement, j'ai fait différentes versions mais je les ai toutes jetées. En demandant à mes collègues quilteuses, on m’a parle de la pâte adhésive cellulosique et j'aime beaucoup l'effet qu'elle crée. Cette pièce était également une bonne occasion d'utiliser certains des tissus commerciaux que j'ai encore en stock.

Et c'est ainsi que ce deuxième tour s'achève pour moi. Je repense à tous les artistes dont nous nous sommes inspirés et au travail que nous avons tous créé et je me sens très chanceux de faire partie de ce groupe.

Je sais qu'un nouveau cycle d'inspiration a maintenant été lancé. J'ai un petit conflit j'espère que vous comprendrez et accepterez ma décision. Je ne suis pas quelqu'un qui peut travailler sur plusieurs pièces en même temps. Je suis maintenant plongé dans un grand projet pour notre exposition l'année prochaine et je ne ferai donc pas les défis SixDames dans le créneau horaire généralement accepté de 3 mois. Je les rejoindrai plus tard dans l'année. J'espère que c'est acceptable.

Et maintenant, je veux dire un immense merci pour toute l'amitié tout au long de cette année, pour toute l'inspiration et le soutien. Je souhaite à chacun de vous et à vos familles un Noël très paisible et mes meilleurs vœux pour une année 2022 très incertaine.

Dear friends,

My response to the Frida Kahlo is, at last, done. Depicting her torn and shredded life but also her characteristic love for colour, it is bold and strong and I like it.  I struggled to get the flowers right, did various versions but threw them all out. In my asking fellow quilters I was  told about cellulose adhesive paste and really like the effect that it created.  This piece was also a good opportunity to use up some of the commercial fabrics I still have laying around.

And so this second round comes to completion for me. I think back to all the artists we have taken as inspiration and the work we all have created and I feel very lucky to be part of this group.

I know a new round of inspiration has now been set in motion. I have a small conflict I hope you will understand and accept my decision.  I am not someone who can work on various pieces at the same time. I am now immersed in a big project for our exhibition next year and so won’t be doing the SixDames challenges in the generally accepted 3 month time slot. I will get to them later in the year. I trust this is acceptable.

And so now I want to say a huge thank you for all the friendship throughout this year, for all the inspiration and support.  I wish each of you and your families a very peaceful Christmas and my very best wishes for the very uncertain 2022.

Je ne reviendrai pas sur la vie de Frida vous l'avez si bien décrite .
Frida Kahlo se représentait souvent sans expression ,j'ai donné vie autour d'elle avec les plantes et les fleurs tropicales qu'elle aimait tant .
Le fond jaune (folie,maladie,peur.... aussi par de soleil et de la joie ( journal de Frida)est  fait avec pochoir et encre acrylique, brodé au piqué libre .
Le portrait de Frida brodé ensuite coloré aux craies ,crayons aquarellables .
Les éléments floraux dessinés sur un coton enduit de Gesso peints avec aquarelle ,encre ,acrylique ,j'aime associer différents mediums entre eux .

Sunshine Yellow

I will not go back over Frida's life, you have described it so well.
Frida Kahlo often portrayed herself without expression, I gave life around her with the plants and tropical flowers she loved so much.
The yellow background (madness, illness, fear also by the sun and the joy of Frida's diary) made with stencil and acrylic ink embroidered with free stitching.
The portrait of Frida embroidered then coloured with chalk, watercolour pencils.
The floral elements drawn on a cotton coated with Gesso painted with watercolour, ink, acrylic, I like to associate different mediums between them.

Dear friends,

Apologies for the delay in commenting and replying. I’ve been away in Portugal for two weeks and am now picking up the threads that were left untied..

The pieces produced for the Frida Kahlo challenge show our diversity of approach as has always been the case. And a new twist in Fran’s creation, the first of a disappearing piece! I too am very pleased that you took a photo before the wind scattered the flowers so we could all see the work. I really liked your thinking behind it, gathering the various threads of Frida’s complicated life and letting it all disperse just as she had so wished for so often.

And then Denise’s work, strong, rich in colour, having a spine at the centre of the work, a spine that was so central in Frida’s life. It’s a piece that reflects her courage and her determination to carry on. Well done, another great piece.

And although I have commented on Claire’s piece I do so enjoy going back to it and appreciating its construction and composition, the colours, the embroidered flowers, just another beautiful piece.

As for my own Frida’s piece, it’s being created. I hope to send you the completed work’s image before our next meeting which is next Sunday and that I am very much looking forward to. Meanwhile, be well and take care. Very best wishes to you all,

Toutes nos excuses pour le retard de commentaire et de réponse. Je suis parti au Portugal depuis deux semaines et je reprends maintenant les fils qui ont été déliés.

Les pièces produites pour le défi Frida Kahlo montrent notre diversité d'approche comme cela a toujours été le cas. Et une nouvelle tournure dans la création de Fran, la première d'une pièce en voie de disparition ! Moi aussi je suis très contente que tu aies pris une photo avant que le vent n'éparpille les fleurs pour que nous puissions tous voir le travail. J'ai beaucoup aimé votre réflexion derrière cela, rassemblant les différents fils de la vie compliquée de Frida et laissant tout se disperser comme elle l'avait tant souhaité si souvent.

Et puis le travail de Denise, fort, riche en couleurs, ayant une colonne vertébrale au centre de l'œuvre, une colonne vertébrale qui était si centrale dans la vie de Frida. C’est une pièce qui reflète son courage et sa détermination à continuer. Bravo, encore une belle pièce.

Et bien que j'aie commenté la pièce de Claire, j'aime tellement y revenir et apprécier sa construction et sa composition, les couleurs, les fleurs brodées, juste une autre belle pièce.

Quant à ma propre pièce de Frida, elle est en cours de création. J'espère vous envoyer l'image de l'œuvre achevée avant notre prochaine réunion qui est dimanche prochain et que j'attends avec impatience. En attendant portez vous bien et prenez soin de vous. Meilleurs voeux à tous,

Frida Kahlo : Fran

 

I was intrigued by Frida’s art but found it difficult to find inspiration.  Hers was obviously at times a very unhappy life “I hope the leaving is joyful and I hope never to return” “ I have had two major catastrophes in my life - one the trolley, the other Diego.  Diego was by far the worst” and very aware of the transient nature of life: “I paint flowers so they won’t die”.  

I decided to do something which lacked permanence. The background is the quotes I found, handwritten and quite spikey as are some of the roots and wire in her paintings; and the flowers, multicoloured, are rice paper.  There is no stitch.  Yesterday was sunny, I took it into the garden where the wind blew it all away.

J'étais intriguée par l’art de Frida, mais avoue que j’ai eu du mal à trouver de l’inspiration.  La sienne était une vie très malheureuse par moment « j'espère que le départ est joyeux et j'espère ne jamais revenir » « j’ai eu deux catastrophes majeures dans ma vie -l’une le tramway l’autre Diego.   Diego était de loin le pire ».  Elle était également consciente de la nature passagère de la vie « je peins les fleurs pour qu’elles ne meurent pas « 

J’ai décidé de faire quelque chose sans permanence.  L'arrière plan est constitué de citations que j’ai trouvées, écrites à la main d’une façon assez pointue, tout comme les  racines dans certaines de ses peintures, et les fleurs, multicolores, sont en papier de riz.  Il n’y a ni piqûre, ni broderie.  Hier il faisait beau et je l’ai emmené dans le jardin où le vent à tout emporté.

At last I have completed the Folon challenge. It looks extremely bland in comparison with the works coming in on Frida Kahlo, so I apologise for the change in visual gear.

I had great fun creating this piece. My house move provided the subject matter. Why not have hearts and stars and flowers raining on my house? And then add a big protective sunflower!

I used Markal Paintstik plus a few beads and both machine and hand stitching.

J'ai enfin terminé le défi Folon. Cela semble extrêmement fade par rapport aux travaux qui arrivent sur Frida Kahlo, alors je m'excuse pour le changement d'équipement visuel.

J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à créer cette pièce. Mon déménagement a fourni le sujet. Pourquoi ne pas faire pleuvoir des cœurs, des étoiles et des fleurs sur ma maison ? Et puis ajoutez un gros tournesol protecteur !

J'ai utilisé Markal Paintstik plus la couture à la machine et à la main.

Un courage et une force de caractère inégalable face à la souffrance, voilà ce que fut la vie de cette artiste mexicaine ! La poliomyélite à 6 ans et un très grave accident de car à 18 ans lui laissent un corps meurtri, déformé et douloureux.
Et pourtant elle n’a de cesse de cacher sa souffrance et de peindre. Ses toiles sont remplies de couleurs vives et éclatantes.
C’est cette déchirure que j’ai voulu retranscrire dans mon travail.
Le rouge pour sa force de caractère mais aussi sa passion pour Diego Rivera,
Le corset qu’elle a si longtemps porté, et dont le laçage se trouve légèrement décentré
Les couleurs vives des fleurs qu’elle aimait tant et dont elle disait : « je peins les fleurs afin qu’elles ne meurent pas »
Et le bleu aussi pour la Casa Azul où l’artiste a vécu une grande partie de sa vie.

Le fond est en laine feutrée, la broderie à la machine et à la main.

Frida Kahlo or the tear...

Unbeatable courage and strength of character in the face of suffering, that was the life of this Mexican artist! Poliomyelitis at 6 years old and a serious bus accident at 18 years old, leaves a bruised, deformed and painful body.
And yet she never stopped hiding her suffering and painting. Her canvases are filled with bright and vibrant colours.
It is this tear that I wanted to transcribe in my work.
The red for her strength of character but also his passion for Diego Rivera,
The corset she wore for so long, with the lacing slightly off-centre
The bright colours of the flowers she loved so much and of which she used to say: "I paint the flowers so that they don't die".
And blue for the Casa Azul where the artist lived for a large part of her life.

Inspired by Frida Kahlo: Claire

 Hello everyone, Salut!

I hope you are all well and have been inspired by Ana's choice of Frida Kahlo. 

J'espère que vous allez tous bien et que vous avez été inspirés par le choix de Frida Kahlo par Ana.

Inner Strength - Claire Passmore 2021

I decided to start this piece with one of the panels I had printed onto fabric a few years ago (6 fitted onto the fabric, so I still have a few left!) The photo is of a building I saw in Freeport, Grand Bahama. There were many of these skeletal buildings dotted around the island, structures that somehow managed to survive being completely demolished by hurricane Michael in 2018. Their resiliance and strength reminded me of Frida and the strength she must have had to endure all the pain and suffring she experienced throughout her life.

Although the woman I painted is a reference to Frida I didn't want to make a copy of one of her portraits. Instead I took many of the things Frida liked to wear - the flowers in her hair, a rebozo shawl,  filagree earings and the greenish pre-Columbian beads, and dressed her accordingly.

To finish the piece I chose to dress the rest of the building in Mexican marrigolds - symbols of sorrow, yet still bright and cheery.

J'ai décidé de commencer cette pièce avec l'un des panneaux que j'avais imprimés sur du tissu il y a quelques années (6 s'ajustaient sur le tissu, il m'en reste donc quelques-uns !) La photo est celle d'un bâtiment que j'ai vu à Freeport, Grand Bahama. Il y avait beaucoup de ces bâtiments squelettiques parsemés sur l'île, des structures qui, d'une manière ou d'une autre, ont réussi à survivre en étant complètement démolies par l'ouragan Michael en 2018. Leur résilience et leur force m'ont fait penser à Frida et à la force qu'elle a dû avoir pour endurer toute la douleur et la souffrance qu'elle a connues tout au long de sa vie.

Bien que la femme que j'ai peinte soit une référence à Frida, je ne voulais pas faire une copie d'un de ses portraits. Au lieu de cela, j'ai pris beaucoup de choses que Frida aimait porter - les fleurs dans ses cheveux, un châle rebozo, des boucles d'oreilles en filigrane et des perles précolombiennes verdâtres - et je l'ai habillée en conséquence.

Pour terminer l'œuvre, j'ai choisi d'habiller le reste du bâtiment avec des fleurs de marguerite mexicaines - symboles de tristesse, mais aussi de joie et de gaieté.

Comme j'ai pris plaisir à voir les créations inspirées de Michel Folon et, comme c'est habituellement le cas, chacune avec sa marque distinctive de l'artisan. Le premier arrivé, celui de Lydie, le jeu d'échelle que j'ai trouvé très intéressant et bien sûr très caractéristique du travail de Folon. Il y a un aspect amusant, mais aussi ce quelque chose d'inconfortable qui n'a pas de sens.

Fran, la présence frappante des trois personnages en fait une image assez puissante et je l'aime beaucoup. L'ombrage de fond et la gradation de la couleur le liant à l'élément très caractéristique du travail de Folon, je pense, fonctionne très bien.

Je suis toujours émerveillée par la beauté 3D de ton travail Claire et tu l'as encore fait. La gradation des couleurs apparaissant au fur et à mesure que nous passons d'une forme de structure à l'autre est en effet très intelligente. Le travail est impeccable comme toujours.

Et puis Denise, ton travail si léger et onirique, et sa captation dans un cadre dans le temps ! J'ai vraiment aimé lire ce qui s'est passé dans la réflexion derrière la pièce que nous voyons. Je l'aime bien.

Et le mien viendra quand je parviendrai à déballer les cartons et à avoir un peu d'espace de travail dans ma salle de jeux ! En attendant, j'annoncerai l'inspiration pour le prochain défi : je voulais faire venir une artiste féminine et j'en ai choisi une que nous avons toutes rencontrée auparavant, une femme forte, colorée, puissante et influente : Frida Kahlo

How I have enjoyed seeing the creations inspired by Michel Folon and, as is usually the case, each one with its distinctive mark of the maker. The first to arrive, that of Lydie, the playing with scale I found very interesting and of course very characteristic of Folon’s work. There’s an aspect of fun but also that something uncomfortable of the not making sense.

Fran, the striking presence of the three figures makes it quite a powerful image and I like it very much. The background shading and grading of colour linking it to the very characteristic element in Folon’s work I think works very well.

I’m always amazed at the 3D beauty of your work Claire and you have done it again. The grading of colour showing as we move from one form of the structure to the next is very clever indeed. The work is impeccable as always.

And then Denise, your work so light and dreamlike, and the capturing of it in a frame in time! I really enjoyed reading what went into the thinking behind the piece we see. I like it.

And mine will come when I manage to unpack the boxes and get some working space in my play room! Meanwhile I will announce the inspiration for the next challenge: I wanted to bring in a female artist and have chosen one that we have all met before, a strong, colourful, powerful and influential woman: Frida Kahlo

Folon "ma part de rêve..." Denise

 

Ce que j’aime chez Folon, c’est son regard plein de poésie et de délicatesse, sa curiosité sur le monde. Il aborde tous les thèmes avec un regard particulier où le rêve est toujours présent.
Il disait lui-même : « J’ai simplement essayé de fixer mes propres rêves, avec l’espoir que les autres y accrochent les leurs ».

J’ai donc réalisé un travail en organza et en piqué libre, pour capter la légèreté de son trait de crayon, les dégradés subtils de couleurs que l’on retrouve dans son travail.
J’ai aussi encadré ce travail pour saisir ce moment « instantané » qu’est le rêve, on le saisit au passage, puis il s’envole.

What I like about Folon is his eyes full of poetry and delicacy, his curiosity about the world.  He approaches all themes with a particular eye where the dream is always present.
He himself said, "I just tried to fix my own dreams, hoping that others would hang on to theirs."

So I did a work in organza and free machine embroidery, to capture the lightness of his pencil stroke, the subtle shades of colors that we find in his work.
I also framed this work to capture this “instantaneous” moment that is the dream, we capture it in passing, and then it flies away.
This is “my part of the dream…”

Inspired by Jean-Michel Folon: Claire Passmore

This was a really difficult artist for me to use for inspiration - and I don't really know why! It is not because I do not like Folon's work, on the contrary, I love his use of vibrant colour and the clever 'jokes' he makes, playing around with scale,  ideas, negative space and so on. After several attempts with different ideas I decided to just focus on the title of the piece below, and colour. Here is the piece I chose to inspire me: Couché de Soleil.

J'ai eu beaucoup de mal à m'inspirer de cet artiste - et je ne sais pas vraiment pourquoi ! Ce n'est pas parce que je n'aime pas le travail de Folon, au contraire, j'adore son utilisation de couleurs vives et les " blagues " intelligentes qu'il fait, en jouant avec l'échelle, les idées, l'espace négatif, etc. Après plusieurs tentatives avec différentes idées, j'ai décidé de me concentrer sur le titre de la pièce ci-dessous, et sur la couleur. Voici l'œuvre que j'ai choisie pour m'inspirer : Couché de Soleil.

The careful transition of colour from deep red, through yellow to a faint green is perfect  The small man, looking upwards at the white circle... makes me smile. Has the sun fallen from the sky or is that just a big boulder? - that is for us to decide I guess.

This is my piece, which I have called 'Nocturnal Glow'

 La transition prudente de la couleur, du rouge profond au jaune en passant par un vert pâle, est parfaite -  Le petit homme, qui regarde le cercle blanc vers le haut... me fait rire. Le soleil serait-il tombé du ciel ?  C'est à nous d'en décider, je suppose.

Voici mon oeuvre, que j'ai appelé "Lueur Nocturne".

It is made from cotton organdie, as most of my other pieces in this style are. I love the vibrant colour that can be achieved when it is dyed. I hope you like it!

Il est réalisé en coton organdi, comme la plupart de mes autres pièces de ce style. J'adore les couleurs vives que l'on peut obtenir lorsqu'il est teint. J'espère qu'il vous plaira !

Jean-Michel Folon : Fran

 

A few things struck me about this artist's work - his use of gradations in colour; his birdmen; that he often was asked to design for other media (books, cinema, etc).  So I thought I would design my Folon-style cover for a favourite Play produced in 1988 and television serial in 1991 A Question of Attribution.

I chose this for many reasons - the play compares a dual portrait with possibly a missing man (or men) with the picture  The Allegory of Prudence by Titian.  There were been questions over whether the painting was his; whether it really is about Prudence or the Ages of Man, and the play is about spy rings, and whether there was another man (or men)......  Blunt who is the Art Adviser to the Queen in the Play turns out to be a spy - in 1979 and the picture when x-rayed shows the possibility of a third and possibly fourth man.

Certaines choses m'ont frappees dans le travail de cet artists - son utilisation des degrades de couleurs, ses hommes-oiseaux, qu'on lui ai demande souvent de concevoir pour d'autres supports - livres, cinema, etc).  J'ai donc pense que je ferais la couverture en style Folon pour une serie televisee preferee qui est sortie il y a de nombreuses annees: A Question of Attribution. 

Je l'ai choisie pour beaucoup de raisons - la piece de theatre se passe dans une salle devant une peinture sois disant de deux personnes mais peut etre il y en a un troisieme.... et sois disant fait par Titian et est comparee avec Allegory of Prudence by Titian.  Il y a eu des questions quant a savoir si la peinture etait la sienne; s'il s'agit vraiment de Prudence ou les ages de l'homme; la production concerne les reseaux d'espionnage et s'il y avait un troisieme ou meme un quartrieme homme....  en fait Blunt qui est le conseiller artistique de la Reine d;Angleterre s'avere etre un espion et quand la peinture est radiographiee il y a en effet une troisieme et peut etre une quatrieme personne.

J'ai employé uniquement des craies et des crayons aquarellables pour garder l'esprit de l’aquarelliste J. M .Folon avec de larges dégradés de couleurs.

J'aime la poésie qui se dégage de son œuvre ,l'errance de ses   personnages .

Les éléments ont été dessinés ,peints à part ensuite appliqués sur le fond  .

L'oiseau et le poisson font allusion à une chanson de Juliette Gréco ,paroles de J.M. Riviere .

I used only watercolour chalks and pencils to keep the spirit of the watercolourist J. M. Folon with large colour gradations.

I like the poetry that emerges from his work, the wandering of his characters.

The elements were drawn, painted separately and then applied to the background.

Lors d'une exposition d'Art Textile en Belgique de voir les vitraux de l'église romane de Xaha réalisés par J.M.Folon  .

Envolons nous avec  les formes et les couleurs de cet artiste .
